Work affirmation:  Chief Executive CY Leung meets President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

President hails HK Gov't efforts

December 18, 2013

President Xi Jinping has commended the Hong Kong Government for successfully implementing the “Seek Change, Maintain Stability” and “Making People the Priority" directions over the past year.

Mr Xi met Chief Executive CY Leung in Beijing today, and told him the Central Government affirms this work.

He said the economic reforms planned in the Third Plenary Session of the 18th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China last month have had substantial impacts on the country’s development, providing opportunities for further Mainland-Hong Kong co-operation.

He said the Central Government’s stance on selecting the Chief Executive by universal suffrage in 2017 is clear. He urged various sectors in Hong Kong to discuss the issue pragmatically and reach a consensus according to the Basic Law and the National People's Congress Standing Committee's decisions and interpretations.

Mr Leung said with the Central Government's support, the Hong Kong Government has made substantial achievements in implementing economic development policies and improving people’s livelihoods in the past year.

He said he believes the Government can continue to develop the economy, improve livelihoods, and advance the constitutional reform consultation in the next year.

Mr Leung also said he is confident the goals of the third plenary session can be achieved, and that Hong Kong can contribute to the process.
