Sophia Chan checks mosquito work

September 08, 2016

Under Secretary for Food & Health Prof Sophia Chan inspected mosquito prevention and control measures in Central today in view of the recent Dengue fever infections there.

She was accompanied by Centre for Health Protection Controller Dr Leung Ting-hung and Food & Environmental Hygiene Department Pest Control Officer-in-charge Lee Ming-wai.

Speaking to the media after the inspection, Prof Chan said all three recent local Dengue fever cases occurred in Central and the Government is boosting mosquito control measures there.

The Food & Environmental Hygiene Department will collect mosquito samples in Central to trace the source of infection.

Prof Chan warned that mosquito control measures are important to prevent Dengue or Zika virus infections from becoming endemic, which could lead to an enormous number of infections.

She said the Government is working closely with the community at district levels to control mosquitoes, but personal efforts to take care of environmental hygiene is also important.

People should report mosquito problems to the Government by calling 1823, she added.
