Flu activity remains high

February 18, 2015

The Centre for Health Protection today urged people to stay vigilant against seasonal influenza, as the latest surveillance data shows flu activity remains high.

From noon yesterday to noon today, 10 new severe adult influenza cases were recorded, including eight deaths. Another death was recorded among the previously reported cases.

A daily average of 10.6 cases and eight deaths were recorded last week, a record high in influenza seasons since 2011.

The percentage of specimens testing positive for seasonal flu viruses dropped to 27.4% last week from 34.6% in the first week of February, compared with the peak of 38.7% in the last week of January.

About 95% of influenza virus detections were A(H3N2).

The centre urged people to stay vigilant, get vaccinated early, and maintain good personal and environmental hygiene.
