Elderly urged to get flu jabs

February 08, 2015

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man has advised the elderly not to wait until the new flu vaccines arrive, but to get vaccinated as soon as possible, if they have not already done so.

Speaking to reporters today, Dr Ko said the vaccines that are available still offer protection against influenza, despite not targeting the current H3N2 strain.

People should also maintain a healthy lifestyle and pay attention to personal and environmental hygiene, he added.

On the issue of medical services during the upcoming festive period, Dr Ko said authorities will provide information on community doctors who are on duty during the Lunar New Year, and urged people not to avoid seeking medical advice if they fell ill.

The health chief added that the Hospital Authority would ensure there was a flexible deployment of staff and sufficient manpower to deal with the influenza outbreak and emergencies.
