Flu vaccine meeting set

February 11, 2015

A meeting on the effectiveness of getting vaccinated against the new H3N2 virus in addition to the original influenza vaccine will be held on February 17, Centre for Health Protection Controller Dr Leung Ting-hung announced today.

Dr Leung told reporters that there is not much data to support whether two flu jabs will affect the vaccine's effectiveness or increase any side-effects. Experts will discuss relevant issues at the meeting.

He stressed that due to a lack of immediate scientific data, one meeting alone may not be enough to yield many recommendations for the community.

Dr Leung noted that current influenza activity remains very high and that the centre would closely monitor its developments.

From noon yesterday to noon today, 11 additional severe flu cases, including six deaths were reported, bringing the total number to 247, including 164 deaths.

As the Lunar New Year approaches, Dr Leung reminded people to maintain strict personal hygiene both locally and during travel, and advised high risk groups and those with respiratory symptoms to wear masks when going to crowded places or festive gatherings.
