Chief Executive Carrie Lam met General Administration of Sport of China Director Gou Zhongwen and Hong Kong athletes competing in the 13th National Games on the second day of her Tianjin visit.

During a breakfast meeting with Mr Gou today, Mrs Lam thanked him for inviting her to attend the opening ceremony of the games.

She said she believed athletes from Hong Kong and across the Mainland would enjoy the opportunity to compete and learn from each other.

Mrs Lam also thanked the General Administration of Sport of China for its support in arranging for national team members to participate in Hong Kong sports events and demonstration performances to celebrate the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s 20th anniversary.

She then visited Hong Kong athletes at the Athletes' Village.

Noting the Hong Kong delegation to this year’s games is the biggest ever, she encouraged the athletes to do their best to scale new heights and bring home honour.

She added the Government will continue to invest substantially to further sports development, nurture elite athletes, and proceed with the construction of the Kai Tak Sports Park to attract more major sporting events to Hong Kong.

Mrs Lam later visited the Tianjin International Joint Academy of Biomedicine which signed a co-operation agreement with the Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation in 2015.

The agreement promotes exchanges between young Hong Kong and Mainland entrepreneurs, explores business opportunities, and boosts the development of innovation and technology between the two places.

She also met with representatives of Hong Kong organisations in Tianjin to learn about their everyday lives and work.

She said she hoped the Tianjin Liaison Unit of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government would provide comprehensive services to Hong Kong people in the city.

In the evening, Mrs Lam attended the opening ceremony of the 13th National Games at the Tianjin Olympic Centre Stadium.
