SJ urges democrat discourse

April 23, 2015

Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen has called on pan-democratic legislators opposed to the Government's electoral reform package to explain how Hong Kong can have universal suffrage for the selection of the Chief Executive if they reject the proposal.

Speaking to reporters after appearing on a radio programme today, Mr Yuen said the pan-democrats owe the public an explanation.

He said they have not told the public what the chances are of getting another proposal that is not only acceptable to them, but also other community sectors and the Central Government.

The pan-democrats’ stance is to object to any proposal made on the basis of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee decision last August, he said.

On the proposed composition of the nominating committee for the Chief Executive election, Mr Yuen said the Government must consider not just legal factors but also political reality, meaning the chance to forge a consensus.

Changing the composition of any sub-sector might result in failure to get the proposal passed by the Legislative Council, and delaying the progress of achieving universal suffrage, he added.
