Reform vote expected mid-year

March 03, 2015

Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen expects that the constitutional reform package can be put to a vote in the Legislative Council by the middle of the year.

Speaking to reporters after a Tuen Mun District Council meeting this morning, Mr Yuen said it will take about a month for the Government to analyse the views collected in the second round of consultation which ends on Saturday.

It would then compile a report and submit a proposal to the Legislative Council.

Mr Yuen said he had heard views that the Government should state clearly, in black and white, that the 2017 universal suffrage package would not be the endgame and could be further enhanced in future, adding that he would discuss ways to take those opinions forward.

The justice chief also noted that the Basic Law has stipulated the electoral arrangement can be amended after 2017.
