Gov't aims for competitive CE polls

April 14, 2015

Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen said today the Government's constitutional reform package which will be submitted to the Legislative Council soon, aims to allow more potential Chief Executive candidates to enter the nomination process.

Speaking to reporters in Beijing, Mr Yuen said there will be a low entry threshold, so that the nominating committee can have more candidates to choose from. He added that while it would make the process more competitive, there will also be a chance for the hopefuls to explain their election platforms and political ideas to the community.

Mr Yuen said the Government will unveil the package and submit it to the Legislative Council before next week.

He noted that the pan-democrats should be aware that the National People's Congress Standing Committee's decision made on August 31 last year cannot be changed, as it was made after carefully considering the city's situation.
