153 ATV wage claims received

February 17, 2016

The Labour Department has received claims from 153 ATV employees for $16.22 million in wages owed from October 2014 to this month.

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung told lawmakers today that 51 employee claims have been settled, while 102 have been referred to the Labour Tribunal or the Minor Employment Claims Adjudication Board.

Among them, 45 claimants obtained an award in their favour or reached settlement with the employer, 12 did not file their claims, seven withdrew their claims, while 38 claims are being processed.

The department laid 204 summonses in four batches against ATV and its director for late wage payments.

ATV pleaded guilty to 102 summonses and was fined $1.07 million, while the director was convicted of 100 summonses and fined $150,000.

Mr Cheung noted that the department will continue to assist the employees and initiate prosecution if there is sufficient evidence.
