ATV urged to pay wages

February 04, 2016

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung has urged broadcaster ATV's management to honour the pledge it made yesterday to pay staff by tomorrow, adding that it is incumbent on ATV as an employer to pay wages on time.

Mr Cheung told reporters today that an investigation into the wage arrears is continuing and that the Labour Department has secured the co-operation of some employees who have agreed to act as prosecution witnesses.

He noted that the department is currently seeking legal advice and if there is sufficient evidence to prove that ATV willfully and without reasonable excuse delayed paying salaries, it would launch prosecution proceedings.

Mr Cheung also said the department has issued another warning letter to ATV's directors reminding them of the consequences of not paying wages on time.

Labour officers inspected the broadcaster's offices again today and spoke with staff about any assistance they may need.

Mr Cheung said the department has organised briefings in the past to inform ATV staff of their statutory rights and benefits, as well as on the employment services provided by the Government, and it can arrange more briefings if the employees consider it necessary.

It has also canvassed 230 vacancies in other broadcasting companies in production, engineering and sales which will be suitable for ATV staff if they decide to change jobs, he added.
