Independence calls contrary to law: SJ

April 23, 2016

Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen says the Department of Justice has been liaising with law enforcement agencies on how best to handle those calling for Hong Kong’s independence.

Responding to a newspaper article calling on the Government to take action against those seeking independence, Mr Yuen told reporters today that it is looking at the issue from four legal perspectives including the Companies, Societies and Crimes ordinances and whether it would cause any other criminal offences.

He also reiterated that advocating independence is totally contrary to the Basic Law and Hong Kong’s legal status, adding that the Government takes the matter seriously and does not condone any acts contrary to the laws of Hong Kong.
