Hawker control officer dies

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man has extended his condolences to the family of the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department hawker control officer Wu Kwong-sum who died today.

 

Dr Ko said the department will provide whatever assistance Mr Wu's family needs.

 

Director of Food & Environmental Hygiene Vivian Lau also expressed sadness at Mr Wu's death and offered her condolences to his family.

 

"Having joined the department for over 30 years, Mr Wu served the community with dedication and perseverance. His performance was outstanding and he was held in high regard by colleagues. I am deeply grieved at the loss of such a devoted officer."

 

She condemned the use force against public officers, saying she is very concerned about staff safety.

 

The department will meet with staff unions and grade representatives to see if there is a need to improve work arrangements, procedures and equipment.

 

Aged 58, Mr Wu was attached to the Central-Western District Environmental Hygiene Office. He was critically injured near Des Voeux Road in Central on March 15, sustaining severe head injuries.

 

A man has been arrested over the incident.
