3rd local Dengue case confirmed

November 08, 2014

The Centre for Health Protection is investigating the third local confirmed case of Dengue fever this year and believes there may be more than one source of infection in Hong Kong.

Speaking at a press conference today, Centre for Health Protection Controller Dr Leung Ting-hung confirmed the case, saying it involves a 36-year-old woman who had not been to the construction site in Sai Ying Pun which was the source of the first two local infections.

She fell ill on November 2 and consulted a private doctor on November 5. She was then sent to Princess Margaret Hospital.

She lives in Chung Mei Lo Uk Village, Tsing Yi, where she was bitten by mosquitoes. She was also bitten in Tsing Yi Northeast Park.

She is in stable condition.

Dr Leung said he is highly concerned about the additional case and suspects there might be local transmission of the Dengue virus in other areas.

"We are working closely with the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department to assess and prevent any spread of infection."

He urged people to avoid mosquito bites and to eliminate pockets of stagnant water that serve as breeding sites for mosquitoes.
