2 arrested for lard oil scam

September 12, 2014

Police have arrested two staff of export company Globalway Corporation for fraud.

Director of Food & Environmental Hygiene Vivian Lau told the media today it is believed the company sold lard for animal feed as edible lard to Taiwan’s Chang Guann Company.

Globalway also imported two kinds of oil produced by Chang Guann. The revelation brings the number of Hong Kong companies that had imported lard from Chang Guann to six.

Ms Lau said the data matches information provided by Taiwan authorities.

Taiwan officials today advised that 24 other Chang Guann oil brands be banned.

The Food & Environmental Hygiene Department will ban their importation, and investigate whether any food producers used these brands of oil to produce food.

She said traders should stop selling the products and start a recall.

The department is also considering to make the recall mandatory, to ensure no affected food continues to circulate in the market, she added.
