Gov't tackles tourism fraud

November 06, 2015

The Government is proposing a series of measures to strengthen regulation of Mainland tours to Hong Kong, Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So says.

He told reporters today that the measures would include more customs checks and enforcement at popular tourist shopping areas.

Local tour agencies receiving Mainland tour groups will also be requested to submit a full name list of tourists and guides to the Hong Kong Travel Industry Council to identify any 'shadow shoppers'.

The council will also have to verify the contracts local tour agencies sign with the Mainland agencies to see if they are involved in 'zero/negative fare tour packages'.

Mr So hopes the measures can be implemented as soon as possible.

He will meet China National Tourism Administration officials in Beijing on November 11, to discuss tighter controls on both places' tourism markets.
