Meet the media

Meet the media:  Financial Services Development Council Chairman Laura Cha (second right) meets the media to discuss the council's work.

Laura Cha to head financial council

January 17, 2013
Laura Cha was named the chairman of the Financial Services Development Council today.

The Chief Executive announced the establishment of the council in his maiden Policy Address yesterday.

He also appointed 20 non-official members to the council. The appointments are for two years from today.

Speaking to the media, Mrs Cha said the council will provide a platform for market practitioners to voice their views on the current system, on whether improvements can be made, and whether there are new suggestions for new areas that Hong Kong can develop in terms of new business or new markets.

“What we want to do is to make proposals, to make considered proposals to the Government. We cannot actually implement all we propose. That would be up to the Government: one, whether to adopt the proposal; and, secondly, to assign to allocate the proposals to the relevant executive bodies.”

The Chief Executive said in the Policy Address the council will provide a high-level and effective platform for stakeholders to explore ways to complement the internationalisation of the Mainland's financial market, and to help facilitate the further development of Hong Kong's financial services industry.

The terms of reference of the council are to conduct policy research and industry surveys for the formulation of proposals to the Government and regulators, and work with regulatory and trade bodies to identify new opportunities for, and any constraints on, the sustainable growth and diversity of the financial services industry.

It will liaise with related bodies on the Mainland and overseas to support Hong Kong's financial services industry in accessing new markets and growth areas, to facilitate the upgrading of skills and expertise through collaboration with education and training institutions, trade bodies and practitioners, and promote on the Mainland and overseas Hong Kong's financial services industry and the city as an international financial centre through seminars, road shows, publications, and through active participation in international events.
