Tackling housing problem top priority: CE

January 16, 2013
Chief Executive CY Leung has reiterated that tackling the housing problem is his top priority, particularly helping people on the waiting list for public rental housing.

Mr Leung attended a press conference today and a television discussion panel tonight to further explain his policy address. Housing issues and poverty alleviation are the focus of concern. He said he will do his utmost to increase land supply.

The Government will expedite the supply of land, Mr Leung said, adding he has asked local communities to support the switch of land use.

In recent months many measures have been launched to improve the situation, he said, such as the Greenview Villa subsidised housing project in Tsing Yi, and the Special Stamp Duty.

On poverty alleviation, Mr Leung said it will not take long to set up the poverty line, noting that the requests of the needy will not be overlooked in the interim.

Mr Leung said the Policy Address is meant for more than 7 million Hong Kong people. He will continue to roll out measures when they are ready, and has urged Hong Kong people to work together to build a better Hong Kong.

He also explained the address' cover photo, which depicts a group of young people running on a lawn, signifying people-oriented, forward-looking policies, and illustrating the solidarity of Hong Kong people, regardless of their race and religion.
