2.2m vote in LegCo election

September 05, 2016

About 2.2 million electors have cast their vote in the geographical constituencies in the 2016 Legislative Council Election, for a turnout rate of 58%, compared to 53.05% in the 2012 election.

Electoral Affairs Commission Chairman Justice Barnabas Fung unveiled the provisional turnout rates of the election during a visit to the Central Counting Station early this morning, hours after polling closed last night.

About 1.98 million of these electors also cast their votes in the District Council (second) functional constituency, representing 57% of total electors, compared to 51.95% in the previous election.

About 170,000 people voted in other functional constituencies, with a turnout rate of 74%.

Mr Fung apologised for the polling arrangements in Taikoo where hundreds of people had to queue until 2.30am to cast ballots, four hours after the polling station closed.

He said the only secondary school in the district, which lent out its premises for polling in the previous Legislative Council Election, declined to do so this time and the commission had to make do with a much smaller venue yesterday.

He also thanked voters for being patient in waiting for their turn to vote.

The commission received 2,200 complaints, including 700 election advertisements and 500 concerning eligibility of electors. The commission will follow up on the complaints soon, Justice Fung added.
