Independence advocacy handled by law

August 30, 2016

The Government is concerned about individual candidates in the Legislative Council election advocating or promoting the "independence of the Hong Kong SAR" during the election period and reserves the right to take follow-up actions in accordance with the law.

In a statement released today, the Government said it has always been striving to ensure that public elections in Hong Kong are held in strict accordance with the law, openly, honestly and fairly, in line with the expectations of the community at large.

The Government is concerned that individual candidates have during the election period, advocated or promoted the “independence of the Hong Kong SAR”.

Since such behaviour goes against the statutory declaration that they will uphold the Basic Law and pledge allegiance to the HKSAR which they signed before their nomination was validated, the Government reserves the right to take follow-up actions in accordance with the law, the statement added.
