Electoral Affairs Commission Chairman Justice Barnabas Fung said polling stations are running smoothly, and called on registered electors to cast their votes in the 2012 Legislative Council Election.
Speaking after visiting the polling station at Hong Kong Park Sports Centre this morning, Justice Fung said voting is simple and electors should exercise their civic rights. He said the commission is committed to ensuring the election is conducted in a fair, clean and honest manner.
As at 9.30am, 135,069 geographical-constituency electors had voted, bringing the cumulative turnout rate to 3.9%, higher than the 3.07% rate recorded at the same time in the last LegCo election.
As at 9 am, 187 complaints had been received, mainly involving election advertisements. Justice Fung said the commission would handle the complaints according to standard procedures and work with relevant units to ensure the election is conducted in a fair, clean and honest manner.
With the introduction of the District Council (second) functional constituency, about 3.22 million registered geographical constituency electors who do not belong to any of the 28 traditional functional constituencies will cast one vote each in their respective geographical constituency and the District Council (second) functional constituency.
A total of 549 ordinary polling stations and 25 dedicated polling stations across Hong Kong are open today for about 3.466 million registered electors to cast their votes.
Justice Fung and commission members Lawrence Lok and Prof Andrew Chan will inspect polling stations across Hong Kong today to see how electoral activities are conducted.
