Man arrested in illicit cigarette haul
*
Customs & Excise Department

Customs officers have arrested a 37-year-old man and impounded a truck in an illicit cigarette case involving a total value of $1.37 million and a dutiable value of $930,000.

Officers yesterday inspected a lorry in Kwai Chung which they found to be a mobile centre for packing illicit cigarettes. They seized 360,000 illicit cigarettes, 340kg of duty-not-paid tobacco, 175 litres of illicit motor spirit and counterfeit tobacco labels.

The cigarettes and tobacco were to be repackaged and mailed to the UK, while the illicit motor spirit was for local consumption.

The man has been released on bail.

To report suspected illicit cigarette activities call 2545 6182.
