Volunteer team to provide after-fire services

Fire Services Department

The Fire Services Department has formed a volunteer team to help the poor redecorate their flats after fires.

Director of Fire Services Kwok Jing-keung said on a radio talk show today that the team will provide "after-fire services" to the needy, which is a new concept to the department.

He said the Fire Safety (Buildings) Ordinance is expected to be enforced in July to improve fire safety installations and equipment in old composite buildings and domestic premises.

As more than 9,000 buildings are involved, a phased implementation programme will be adopted. Phase I involves composite buildings constructed before 1973.

The Government will enhance publicity to promote the new law in the next few months and those who have financial need can apply for funds to upgrade equipment.

Mr Kwok said public co-operation is crucial in fire prevention work, adding that the department has recruited more than 77,000 fire prevention ambassadors to help disseminate anti-fire messages.

The programmes, launched in 1997, has helped reduce the number of major fires.
