West Rail fire boosts coordination efforts
*
Fire Services Department

The authorities are still investigating the cause of Wednesday's fire in a West Rail train, Director of Fire Services Kwok Jing-keung says, adding the experience from the incident can help improve coordination between the rail company and firefighters.

Speaking on a radio talk show today, Mr Kwok said the incident proved Tai Lam Tunnel's ventilation and back-up lighting systems were effective in evacuating commuters and helping firefighters arrive at the scene in the shortest time.

He said there is still room for improvement on the coordination between the rail company and firefighters.

All parties concerned will review contingency plans to cope with major railway incidents, particularly those that might occur inside Tai Lam Tunnel, to improve prevention and evacuation measures.

He said firefighters had done a good job in this incident, adding commuters' calm reaction had also helped ensure an orderly evacuation.
