Goods handled through SuperLink up 220%
*

Cross-boundary cargo throughput handled through the SuperLink China Direct service rose 220% from 5,460 tonnes in 2003 to 17,500 tonnes last year, Secretary for Economic Development & Labour Stephen Ip says.

Mr Ip told lawmakers today that when Air Cargo Terminals launched the service in 2000, it only offered consolidated truck service between Hong Kong and Guangzhou's airports. The service has now been extended to seven destinations in Guangdong and Fujian.

All loaded cargo trucks for the SuperLink China Direct service are sealed at the terminal under the supervision of the Customs & Excise Department.

Upon arrival at the control point in Huanggang, the trucks will be sealed again by Mainland customs. The seals will only be removed upon arrival at the designated collection and distribution centres on the Mainland. The arrangement ensures the cargo within the trucks is not tampered with throughout the journey.

To further enhance security, the terminal is considering new technology like global positioning systems and electronic seals.
