Logistics development with Mainland vital
*

The Logistics Development Council today affirmed the need for developing multi-modal transportation links to the Pearl River Delta region.

At the first meeting of its second term, members reviewed progress made in 2002 and agreed on the work plan for 2003, which it described as the "year of implementation".

Members affirmed the importance of reinforcing Hong Kong's constructive partnership with the Delta, especially in developing multi-modal transport links.

They welcomed a cross-boundary study that recommends a broad framework for pursuing logistics co-operation with the Mainland, and looks at the feasibility of operating concepts such as logistics pipelines and inland freight villages.

Members said enhancing physical connectivity with the Delta is high on its agenda and that the Council will closely monitor progress in achieving the target of freight vehicles crossing the boundary within one hour.

Early completion of an additional bridge at Lok Ma Chau is also a high priority to relieve congestion.

Council chairman, and Secretary for Economic Development & Labour, Stephen Ip said: "2003 will be a year of implementation for the Council as members take forward key initiatives for promoting logistics development in Hong Kong."

To promote active discussion between members and facilitate better planning in taking forward the key initiatives, the Council and its five Project Groups will meet on a quarterly basis to review progress and offer advice on the way forward, he added.
