Building Integrated Photovoltaic system
Power saver: Hong Kong's largest solar electricity generation system atop Wan Chai Tower.
*

Hong Kong's largest solar electricity generation system was installed today atop Wan Chai Tower.

Electrical & Mechanical Services Department officers installed the Building Integrated Photovoltaic system.

The 12-month pilot project is to assess its effectiveness in generating electricity in Hong Kong's geographic and climatic conditions, and demonstrate the potential applications of photovoltaic technology in buildings.

Tender was invited for local and international companies to implement the project with a view to introducing worldwide technologies to Hong Kong. The design and installation works have taken eight months to complete.

The project involves the installation of 500 square metres of photovoltaic panels with a total peaked capacity of 55 kilowatts.

This energy from the sun will save about 23 tonnes in carbon dioxide emissions from power stations annually, helping hinder global warming.
