Telecommunications laws have been updated and the regulations governing the use of some products have been relaxed.

The Telecommunications (Telecommunications Apparatus) (Exemption from Licensing) Order was gazetted today, providing a more user- and business-friendly regulatory environment.

The Commerce, Industry & Technology Bureau said more frequency bands will be released for the public to deploy new wireless devices. These include the opening of the 5150 - 5350 MHz band to establish wireless local area networks, as well as new bands for cordless telephones, wireless smart-card systems and short-range radio systems.

The move puts Hong Kong among the world's first batch of economies to open the 5150 - 5350 MHz band.

The Bureau said with the growing popularity of wireless LAN services in Hong Kong, the move is beneficial for both consumers and businesses. It said the new regulations will facilitate the development of a vibrant and thriving telecommunications market.
