Five Hong Kong students will participate in the 36th International Physics Olympiad in Spain from July 3 to 12, 2005. This will be the second time Hong Kong students have participated in the competition.
More than 70 five-member teams from around the world will take part in this year's contest, which aims to enhance the development of international contacts in the field of physics education and provide more exposure to the international arena for students with high potential in physics.
The contestants will face challenging questions involving theories and experiments.
The five Hong Kong representatives are Tsui Lok-man of Sing Yin Secondary School, Cheung Ka-hei of Wah Yan College (Hong Kong), Lai Kai-tsun of Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School, Cheng Wa-wing of Kwun Tong Maryknoll College and Yeung Tim-wai of Carmel Secondary School.
At a flag presentation ceremony today, they were named Hong Kong's official representatives in the contest.
Principal Assistant Secretary for Education & Manpower (Curriculum Development) Dr Chan Ka-Ki, Associate Dean of Science of Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Prof Ng Tai-kai and Physical Society of Hong Kong representative Prof Michael Wong officiated at that ceremony.
Students who made outstanding achievements in the Hong Kong Physics Olympiad 2005 held in May accepted prizes at the ceremony.
22 students took top honours
Of 911 student participants, 22 were awarded First Honour, 30 students took Second Honour and 46 students Third Honour.
The high-achieving Secondary Four and Five awardees, will participate in enhancement training sessions and their physics teachers will participate in professional development.
After the training, some of the most outstanding students will be selected to represent Hong Kong in the 37th International Physics Olympiad in Singapore in July 2006.
