Young inmates achieve good HKCEE results
*

Young inmates of correctional institutions have obtained good results in the HK Certificate of Education Examination.

Sixty-three took 206 examination papers and achieved one distinction, 15 credits and 86 passes. The pass rate was 49.51%.

The youths are from Lai King Training Centre, and the Pik Uk, Cape Collinson and Tai Tam Gap Correctional Institutions.

Their examination subjects included Chinese language, English language, mathematics, commerce, computer studies, accounts and social studies.

Meanwhile, 72 adults from five correctional institutions took 148 papers in the examination and obtained five credits and 54 passes. Their pass rate was 39.86%.

The overall pass rate for inmates of correctional institutions was 45.48% this year, compared with 39% in 2002.

The Correctional Services Department said it will strive to provide every opportunity for young inmates to equip themselves with knowledge in preparation for their release. With academic qualifications, they stand a better chance of competing for jobs.
