War exhibition to open
August 21, 2014
An exhibition on the First Sino-Japanese War will open at the Museum of Coastal Defence tomorrow, to mark the 120th anniversary of the conflict.
Running until March 11, the exhibition is presented by the Leisure & Cultural Services Department and the Shandong Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau.
It showcases invaluable artefacts and historical photographs covering the origins of the war and its far-reaching impacts on modern China.
Speaking at the exhibition’s opening ceremony today, Under Secretary for Home Affairs Florence Hui said the war was a watershed in modern Chinese history.
In the 1860s, the Qing government promoted the Self-Strengthening Movement. However, it was defeated in the war with the signing of the Treaty of Shimonoseki, ceding territories and paying huge war indemnities.
The exhibits include telescopes used by the Beiyang Fleet, war maps, military uniforms and medals. Some of them are being showcased outside the Museum of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 for the first time.
