Child custody study coming

November 13, 2015

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung says the Government will launch a four-month public consultation on a proposed legislation on child custody and access.

Speaking to reporters after attending the Third Children's Issues Forum today, Mr Cheung said it will be a very important law that consolidates various ordinances.

It will also align Hong Kong's legislation with that of Australia, New Zealand and the UK where the best interests of children is always the guiding principle, he said.

The Law Reform Commission has published four reports relating to child proceedings. The Government has followed up on the one on "guardianship" and "international parental child abduction" by enacting respective ordinances, he said, adding he does not think the Government is working slowly on the matter.
