Gov't saddened by fireman death

Selfless devotion:  Senior Fireman Samuel Hui.

Director of Fire Services Lai Man-hin and various Government officials are saddened by Senior Fireman Samuel Hui's death, and have offered their condolences to his family.

 

The officer sustained serious injuries while fighting the Ngau Tau Kok fire yesterday.

 

He was sent to United Christian Hospital in a coma and later died.

 

"I am profoundly grieved at the loss of this brave and dedicated Senior Fireman. All of our colleagues are highly saddened by the loss of such a devoted comrade. On behalf of all our colleagues, I have offered the deepest condolences to his family," Mr Lai said.

 

"Our Welfare Officer is closely liaising with Mr Hui's family and will render our utmost assistance to help them through this sad and difficult time. The Fire Services Department will set up a funeral committee to make arrangements for Mr Hui's funeral."

 

Aged 37, Officer Hui joined the department in 1998 and was promoted to Senior Fireman in May this year.

 

He is survived by his wife and a son.

 

Mr Lai wished the 10 other firemen injured in the fire a speedy recovery.

 

Acting Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung said he has liaised with the department to expedite the processing of the two fallen firemen's cases under the Financial Assistance Scheme for Family Members of Those Who Sacrifice Their Lives to Save Others, to provide more financial assistance and recognise their selfless devotion and gallantry.

 

Financial Secretary John Tsang said the fire is very serious. He said officers on site are professional and can handle the incident.

 

Secretary for Security TK Lai said the department will support and help Officer Hui's family. He also wished the other firemen injured in the fire a quick recovery.

 

Secretary for the Civil Service Clement Cheung commended Officer Hui for his gallantry and selfless devotion to duty, adding that the Civil Service Bureau and the department will strive to provide support and assistance to his family.
