Storage sites to be inspected

June 22, 2016

The Fire Services Department, Buildings Department, Lands Department, Labour Department and other agencies will inspect all mini-storage sites and similar premises as soon as possible.

Secretary for Security TK Lai told reporters today the Ngau Tau Kok fire has raised public concern over mini-storage sites' fire safety. The departments will investigate whether there is any violation of the law.

The Security Bureau will lead an interdepartmental taskforce to investigate how to boost fire safety in these premises. It will discuss with the industry feasible short and medium term measures to boost fire safety.

Speaking about the death of fire officer Thomas Cheung, Mr Lai expressed profound sadness and sent his condolences to the officer's family. The Fire Services Department will provide them with support and assistance.

The fire scene is very complex with many locked cubicles, making firefighting very difficult, Mr Lai said.

After putting out the blaze, the Fire Services Department will conduct an in-depth investigation on its cause and will study ways to boost fire safety.

On firefighters' use of a fire blower, Mr Lai said it is standard equipment used internationally by various fire services. He said it did not worsen the blaze.
