Gov't addresses shopping, trading nuisance

February 10, 2015

Chief Executive CY Leung says the Government is taking steps to curb problems Mainland visitors cause when they come to Hong Kong in large numbers to shop ahead of the Lunar New Year, and to crack down on parallel trading activities in areas such as Tuen Mun and the northern New Territories.

Mr Leung told reporters today that while the activities obstruct roads and bring inconvenience to local residents, they should not express their disapproval in unlawful ways such as protesting at shopping malls.

The Government carries out stringent law enforcement action against illegal activities including those related to retail operations in industrial buildings, he added.

The Government has also been dealing with street management, public order, cross-boundary traffic and goods supply at a high level with an inter-departmental working group, Mr Leung said.
