286 arrested for parallel trading

February 03, 2015

Police and Immigration officers arrested 286 Mainlanders in North District for parallel trading in December and January.

They will be banned from visiting Hong Kong for two years upon conviction.

Chief Secretary Carrie Lam was briefed on the figures yesterday while chairing an inter-departmental meeting to review the Government's work in combating parallel trading activities, particularly in North District, Yuen Long and Tuen Mun.

The Immigration Department has made a watch list of parallel traders, which has 13,300 people on it so far.

The Lands Department has formed special operation teams to enhance enforcement action against illegal conversion of industrial building units into retail shops.

Police have augmented actions against obstruction and nuisance caused by parallel traders.

The Food & Environmental Hygiene Department has enhanced street cleansing services in those areas affected by parallel trading.

The Transport Department has also reminded bus companies to boost services to cope with increased demand in these areas.

Mrs Lam asked the departments to further boost their actions against these activities ahead of the Lunar New Year.
