Police respect press freedom

November 28, 2014

Police respect press freedom and will facilitate reporters' news coverage at protest areas as far as possible, Police Public Relations Branch Chief Superintendent Steve Hui says, adding reporters should co-operate with Police amid the chaotic scenes.

He gave this assurance at a press conference today, when speaking on yesterday's arrest of a press photographer. He stressed that Police officers take enforcement in a fair and impartial manner regardless of the background or profession of the person involved.

He appealed for mutual understanding and respect between Police and media, suggesting frontline reporters wear clothes that could help easily identify them as such. Reporters should listen to Police officers' instructions at the scene and avoid obstructing Police operations.

Responding to the issue of a Police offer suspected to have used unnecessary force, Mr Hui noted that Police had initiated follow-up action and the officer concerned has been recalled from the current operation.

He stressed that there are stringent guidelines regarding the use of force, and the Police will handle the case in a serious manner.
