Water filters set for tainted estates

July 24, 2015

Water filters will be installed in flats at three public housing estates where excessive lead has been found in the water.

Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung told the media today the main contractors for the estates will be responsible for the installation and future replacement of the filters. They will also bear the cost.

The contractors of Kai Ching Estate and Kwai Luen Estate phase two have already submitted related proposals to the Government, while that of Wing Cheong Estate is considering the matter.

The filters to be installed will have to meet the standard promulgated by the US National Sanitation Foundation, which has proven effective in removing lead.

Prof Cheung also announced that water sample testing will be further extended to cover 26 public housing estates completed between 2005 to 2010, comprising 84,000 units.

Checks will take two months. After that the Government will formulate a plan to conduct, in phases, water sample testing at all other public housing estates, he added.

Meanwhile, the Centre for Health Protection's 2125 1122 hotline has received 2,221 enquiries and arranged 1,190 blood tests so far. It has also arranged development assessment for affected children and will conduct necessary follow-up actions.
