12 more estates to be checked

July 20, 2015

Water quality inspections will be extended to all public housing estates completed after 2011, Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung said today.

The new round of water checks will cover 26,000 units in 35 blocks in 12 estates, and involve six contractors.

He said the extension is to ease residents' concern, and he did not rule out further expanding the scope of testing.

He said water tests in seven of 10 estates have been completed. Only one sample, from Wing Cheong Estate’s estate office in Sham Shui Po, has been found to contain excessive lead. A quick test by the Housing Department suggested it involved soldering materials containing lead.

The department will follow up with the main contractor, provide bottled water for any residents at high risk, provide temporary water supplies, set up water outlets on the ground floor, and conduct a seminar tonight to provide residents with the latest information.
