Sale of some hairy crabs suspended

November 01, 2016

The Centre for Food Safety today ordered the suspension of imports and sale of hairy crabs raised in two aquaculture farms in Jiangsu.

It told the food trade to stop using or selling the products immediately.

Centre for Food Safety Assistant Director Dr Choi Mei-yee said five hairy crab samples were taken by the centre's officers recently during seasonal food surveillance and checked for dioxin and dioxin-like PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), and two exceeded the centre’s limits.

"The centre decided to suspend imports from two of the aquatic product companies.

"Apart from suspending imports and recalling the product from the market, we have also informed Mainland authorities and they are taking action to follow up on the matter and we will closely liaise with them.

"We will also enhance our surveillance of hairy crabs and we will take more samples in the coming days for testing."
