Heavy metals found in mushrooms

February 11, 2015

The Centre for Food Safety has found excessive amounts of the metallic contaminant cadmium in two dried mushroom samples and is following up on the cases.

The samples - Wai Yuen Tong dried mushroom and First Edible Nest dried mushroom were collected from two shops in Quarry Bay for testing under the centre's regular food surveillance programme. The products came from the Mainland.

Test results showed that cadmium levels for the two samples were 0.15 parts per million and 0.13 ppm, exceeding the legal limit of 0.1 ppm.

The centre will instruct the vendors to stop selling affected batches of the products at all their retail outlets, and will trace the source and distribution of the items.

Food safety officials said that based on the levels of cadmium detected in the samples, eating a normal amount of the mushrooms will not cause adverse health effects.
