Paternity leave bill passed

December 18, 2014

The Legislative Council today passed a bill to amend the Employment Ordinance to provide three days' paid paternity leave.

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung said three days is an appropriate, modest starting point, and pledged to review the policy one year after its implementation.

He rejected claims of threatening LegCo about the possible withdrawal of the bill, saying the Government must respect the consensus of the Labour Advisory Board, which has been a long established tripartite mechanism to advising the Government on labour policy matters.

On the wage claims of ATV employees, Mr Cheung said the Government is very concerned about the issue. The Labour Department has issued warning letters to the broadcaster, reminding it of its obligation to pay wages.

Labour inspectors are investigating, he said, adding the department has also set up a hotline and will brief ATV staff on applying for the Protection of Wages on Insolvency Fund.
