5 dengue fever cases reported

December 12, 2014

The Centre for Health Protection today announced that five new dengue fever cases were confirmed in the last two weeks and urged people to guard against the disease.

The five patients had travelled to, or stayed in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and India during the incubation period, the centre said.

As of December 11, there were 109 confirmed cases, including 106 imported cases and three local ones. In the past nine years, there has been an average of more than 50 cases per year.

Health officials stressed that there is no effective vaccine for the disease and the best way to prevent infection is to eliminate pockets of stagnant water which are used as mosquito breeding sites.
