Centre for Food Safety today says a lard sample produced by Taiwan’s Cheng I Food Co contains peroxide exceeding the relevant standard.
As a Food Safety Order has been issued earlier banning the import and supply of fats and oils produced by Cheng I, the centre believed that the affected lard is no longer in circulation.
The product had a net weight of 16kg per carton, and was manufactured on January 6 this year.
The sample was collected from the importer’s storage and was found with a peroxide value of 19 milliequivalents of active oxygen per kg, exceeding the 10mEq standard.
The centre has taken about 210 samples of high-risk and possibly contaminated food products and lard for testing after the substandard lard incident. All but two samples passed the tests, resulting in a 99% satisfactory rate.
The Centre will continue to follow up on the incident and boost surveillance of edible oil and relatively high-risk foods imported from other places.
