Food trade urged to stop using gutter oil

September 06, 2014

The Centre for Food Safety appealed to the trade to stop selling or using oil or food products that may be affected by substandard Taiwan cooking oil.

The centre continues its investigation and today found local oil distributor Shing Cheong Hong might have distributed affected oil. The company had suspended the sale and the centre had taken product samples for testing as well as marked and sealed them.

Regarding two affected food traders identified yesterday, the centre had confirmed that Dah Chong Hong had imported two kinds of affected lard oil. It had also had taken samples of other doubtful food products from Maxim's Cakes for testing.

As notification from Taiwanese authorities is still pending, the centre will focus its investigation on high-risk food trades, including cooking oil, bakeries, dimsum manufacturers and snack shops selling Taiwanese-style food.

People who have concerns about products they purchased should stop consumption and contact the retailers concerned.
