'Gutter oil' case under watch

September 05, 2014

The Centre for Food Safety is investigating claims of 'gutter oil' being used in food products in Taiwan.

Gutter oil is waste cooking oil collected from drains, sewers and garbage cans, and poured into new bottles to be sold to restaurants and bakeries.

Under Secretary for Food & Health Prof Sophia Chan said the Government is concerned about the claims and will announce the centre's findings to the public.

She said a mechanism is in place to test the safety of imported food products, and the centre will check records to see if any suspicious products are on sale in Kong Kong.

On the resumption of Mainland live poultry imports, she said the testing arrangement for avian influenza in live chickens has been agreed on by Hong Kong and Mainland authorities, and the system is being implemented.
