Two raisin samples from a batch of 450 preserved fruit and vegetable samples collected last October and November failed a preservatives check, the Centre for Food Safety announced today.
The centre collected preserved vegetables such as cucumber, radish, leaf mustard, rakkyo, ginger and chillies and preserved fruits such as dried mango, dried pineapple, raisins, apricots, plums, dried apple rings, sour peaches and olives at different retail outlets to test for sulphur dioxide, benzoic acid, sorbic acid and parabens.
The two raisin samples were found to contain sulphur dioxide exceeding the legal limit.
The centre has traced the food source, told the vendor to stop selling the products and issued warning letters. It will prosecute if there is sufficient evidence.
