12 foods fail safety checks

October 31, 2012
Twelve food samples collected last month failed Centre for Food Safety tests.

Releasing the findings of its September food safety report today, the centre said it tested 10,000 food samples during the month, and the overall satisfactory rate was 99.9%.

A fresh straw mushroom contained two kinds of pesticides, while a frozen ling fillet contained mercury. Occasional consumption should not cause any adverse health effects, but long-term consumption can affect the nervous system, the centre said.

A sample of salmon sashimi contained salmonella, which can cause gastrointestinal infection.

The coliform count of five samples of a frozen confection of the same flavour and brand were found to exceed the legal limit.

A sample of soy milk contained E.coli while another of sweet soup contained Bacillus cereus, which can also cause gastrointestinal infection.

The centre has sent warning letters to the vendors concerned.
