Gov't to boost tourism image

February 26, 2016

Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So says Hong Kong's tourism industry should move towards diversified and quality-driven high value-added services to attract more high-spending overnight visitors.

Mr So was elaborating on the initiatives in the 2016-17 Budget at a press conference today.

The Government will allocate $240 million to introduce a series of measures to promote Hong Kong's natural scenery, unique history and culture. The Tourism Board will also produce new videos to promote the city's tourism image around the world.

He said the Lunar New Year incident in Mong Kok had made people overseas question whether Hong Kong had changed, so it was important to cast a positive image and present Hong Kong's best aspects through overseas promotions.

The Government will expand the scale of major events to be held this year, including staging more Hong Kong Pulse 3D Light Shows at the Cultural Centre and expanding the Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival venue.

In the long-term, the city's tourism infrastructure will be upgraded. Projects will include new themed areas and hotels at Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean Park.
