Gov’t to facilitate waste charging plans

September 26, 2013
Secretary for the Environment KS Wong says the Government is planning education and industry support measures to implement solid waste charging.

Speaking to reporters today, Mr Wong said the issue has been under discussion for more than 10 years. The Government now hopes to finalise policy details by gauging people’s views through the Sustainable Development Council, which released a consultation document yesterday.

Other cities have experienced implementation challenges, he said, which Hong Kong can meet by raising public awareness through education.

Mr Wong said the Government will support the recycling industry, and will hold discussions with the trade in October. He also said the Government’s expenditure on waste reduction in the next 10 years would be more than it would receive in waste charges.
